  1. The Bahamas consist of many islands.  San Salvador is one of these islands. 
  2. It is the island that Christopher Columbus first landed on when reaching the
  3. New World but he mistakenly thought he had arrived in India.  The Arawaks
  4. that he met in 1492 were dark skinned and supported his notion that he had
  5. reached India; thus, he called them Indians.  The British took over the islands
  6. in 1783 as a colony but granted the Bahamas internal self-government. 
  7. Independence and self-rule was give in 1973.  
  8. Tourism, investment management, and international banking are the big
  9. business of the Bahamas.
